Moving Day & Chef’s Kitchen

Drove down to Eugene yesterday to help my brother Cliff move to his new house. Compared to typical moves it went really quick and easy (thanks Glen and Jade!).

Afterwards our mom treated us to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Bruno’s Chef’s Kitchen. If you haven’t heard of Chef’s Kitchen, it’s a real jewel of a restaurant tucked away in south Eugene. It’s small, intimate and family run, as Tom (aka Bruno) is the chef, his wife Bessie is host, and one of their kids, Sam, is even working as Tom’s assistant now. As always the food was out of this world. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to order scallops at another restaurant and be happy after trying Cliff’s last night. Oh, and the gnocchi there is so good it should be on everyone’s top 100 things to try during your lifetime! Here are photos:

The Magic Barrel

Dragged Micah and my dad out of the house last night to attend The Magic Barrel at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Corvallis. It’s this thing where local writers read some of their work and all the proceeds go to help feed people through the Linn-Benton Food Share. A lot of local businesses donated food, decorations; plus there was live music before and after the show from Sideways Portal and from The Jeff Mull Band. Here’s a few photos from the show:

Help With Dinner

My friend John Beaver drove up from Eugene today to help out. John made some killer cauliflower and Micah helped me make salad and pasta with fresh tomatoes and herbs from the garden. Then we all cleaned up the kitchen afterwards. Micah is such a good kid – he reminds me of myself as far as getting distracted, but he’s so willing to help out with anything. I don’t remember myself being that willing…

Another Stroke

Yesterday everything was going great until I got home around 9:30 last night. I had just finished a 4 hour senior portrait session (I’ll have to post some of those later), but when I walked into the back room my father said something was wrong. I told him to stay there but he didn’t seem to understand me and almost fell over when he tried standing up. I was pretty sure he was having another stroke (he had had a minor one two years ago), so I called 911. The ambulance and fire truck showed up along with what seemed like a dozen emergency workers and confirmed it was. My dad refused an ambulance ride, so I ended up taking him and Micah to the emergency room, where they kept my dad overnight to do a bunch of tests.

My dad’s back home now but it’s not going to be easy as he lost more of his vision and is having a hard time reading, along with some other problems. I’m not sure how much he’ll recover, but it looks like I’ll at least be spending the next couple weeks taking care of him, plus more time with Micah.

I’m glad I was home when it happened. I’m just going to take this a day at a time and do what I can…
